Korra’s Got Lip

after 4 years, the wait is over! the first two episodes of the highly anticipated series, The Legend of Korra aired on Nickelodeon yestereday, April 14th. It. Was. Excellent. i’ll explain the title of this post and my short review after the jump!

okay! short short short short review time!

The Legend of Korra (TLoK) has by far the BEST animation i’ve seen come out of ANY American created cartoon. the previous holder of this title (in my heart) was well, Avatar: The Last Airbender’s (A:TLA) 4-part series finale.

the 70-year leap forward in technology was quite prevalent. i liked that they naturally progressed into Steam Technology: Steamboats, Automobiles and Dirigibles. but the beautiful trick that Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino have done here, was to keep the same feel as their first series.

i give a lot of credit to the music playing the background. the 1920s Big Band Music fused with Eastern instruments, framed and accentuated the scenes expertly.

props to the very talented voice actors on the show and double props to Andrea Romano for being the BEST Voice Director in the biz.

two words: Pro Bending! :D

storytelling-wise, i really dig how refreshing TLoK is. granted, A:TLA is one of my favorite cartoons ever but when you’re talking about  TLoK as a series all on it’s own, you NEED to bring something new to the table.—it’s like how you want your favorite band to one-up themselves from their previous album.—i feel that Konietzko + DiMartino did just that and more. from Pro Bending to Amon and his Equalists to Jinora, Ikki and Meelo and so many more details, my expectations were WATER BENT right out of the…water. heh. i absolutely loved these first two episodes!

ah yes, the title. for those of you who have already seen the premier, did you notice all of the lip that Korra was giving to the camera? i mean damn:

and i’m sure i missed some too. anyway, i propose to you: TLoK Drinking Games:

> Korra Lip: whenever you see her pout, DRINK!

> Tenzin Rage: whenever you see his bald head get red, DRINK!
